From Todd Haynes sharing his vision with My Morning Jacket to Anton Corbijn refracting a Coldplay show, each of the American Express Unstaged presentations has been decidedly unique. When Jack White grabs his guitar, marshals his band, and connects with actor/director Gary Oldman for a live-streamed romp through the tunes from his forthcoming “Blunderbuss” album on Friday, April 27, the celebrated series will lay claim another singular performance. The show will be live streamed on VEVO at 9 pm ET.
“Blunderbuss,” slated for release on April 24, is the former White Stripes’ singer’s first solo disc under his own name, and it’s a wildly imaginative affair with all sorts of contours. From bone-rattling rock ‘n’ roll to cooing soul motifs to giddy sing-along moments to azure glides through a mildly Celtic playing field, White has banked this new program on scope. The difference between its first two videos tells a big chunk of the story. “Love Interruption” is a tender R&B throwback. “Sixteen Saltines” is vicious garage rock futurism. There’s also a rocking update of Little Willie John’s “I’m Shakin’.” Critics are already claiming the album to be a victory.
A blunderbuss is a prototype of a shotgun, capable of spraying all sorts of ammunition from its muzzle. Gary Oldman is going to have a blast positioning his teammate’s rich work.
“I am extremely excited about the opportunity to collaborate with the incomparable and talented Jack White,” Oldman says. “The plan is to immerse the ‘Unstaged’ livestream audience in both a highly stylized and energetic viewing experience.”
The show, which takes place at NYC’s Webster Hall, will appear on YouTube, and VEVO mobile apps for iOS and Android systems.
